This page provides highly experimental versions of simplified
graphical interfaces that can be used with any version of AMPL.
The three interfaces share a common style, though there are significant differences in details and some capabilities. Each provides a scrolling text window that contains a transcript of the dialog between you and AMPL, a scrolling window that can contain a model, and a scrolling window for data; the model and data windows are optional. There is an entry box for typing AMPL commands, and a variety of pull-down menus and toolbar buttons support common AMPL operations. We are still experimenting with these programs, so there are no warranties at all, not even that the programs work properly, let alone well. We would appreciate bug reports and suggestions for improvement; please write to info@ampl.com.
There are three versions, based on Tcl/Tk, Java, and Visual Basic. For Tcl/Tk and Java, you will need to have AMPL itself and one or more solvers; the Visual Basic version includes Student Editions of AMPL and MINOS.
JavaThis version runs anywhere that a Java engine is installed. It is distributed as Java source. You will have to separately supply AMPL and appropriate solvers, either by purchase (see our listings of vendors and solvers) or by use of student or test versions listed on the AMPL download page.
Visual BasicThis version runs under Windows 95/98/NT. It is distributed as an executable that includes Student Editions of AMPL and the MINOS solver. Double-click setup.exe to install, and choose Amplwin from the Start menu to execute.
